"Whenever pianist Alexander Peskánov is announced to give a concert, audiences expect a pyrotechnic display of blazing fingers coupled with superb musicianship. Expectations were surpassed with the Russian pianist's performance Wednesday in the Assembly Hall as part of the Gina Bachauer International Piano Festival.

Before his final number, Bizet's "Carmen Concert Paraphrase" arranged by Moszkowski and Peskánov, the pianist announced it was "one of the few pieces I'm afraid to play." He proceeded in an execution of transcendental virtuosity. The mesmorized crowd flew to its feet with a standing ovation.

Intelligent phrase work came easily to Peskánov in Beethoven's Opus 10, No.3 Sonata. The classical standard made sense under his fingers, especially in the slow movement. Schumann's "Arabesque" was beauty embodied.

Peskánov made the piano burn with the Book Two Paganini Variations by Brahms. He made child's play of the technical beasts that keep lesser pianists from attempting this imposing composition.

The war-horse of Peskánov's recital was the Second Sonata of Chopin. The artist's passion was the means to an end via his ultra-bravura execution. Slow movement notwithstanding, the sonata's zillion notes were a hurricane of activity-capturing everyone in their vortex, especially in the finale "
